THE MOUNTAIN GOATS – ‘CRY FOR JUDAS’

Last week American folk rock stalwarts the Mountain Goats unveiled their new track ‘Cry For Judas’, taken from upcoming studio album ‘Transcendental Youth’.
With laid back horns and an inspired bass line, ‘Cry For Judas’ is pretty much the perfect summer tune, managing to sound both wistful and defiant in equal measures. John Darnielle’s voice is fantastically off-beat, with a rough-edged, unconventional charm that errs just on the right side of whiny. But like all the best singer-songwriters, with Darnielle it’s more about the poetic lyrics than the vocal talent. Witty declarations abound, while the addition of a catchy, sing-a-long chorus means this one will probably be stuck in your head for quite a while.
The new album is released on October 2nd, and can be pre-ordered here. Meanwhile, listen to ‘Cry For Judas’ below, or download it for free from the band’s website.
